STEM project Weg Van 't School (Go with the velo)
Weg Van 't School is an exciting STEM project for teachers of the 1st grade SO. This is a collaboration of Go With The Velo, Cera and Brightlab. Together with your students you work on bicycle safety and STEM in the school environment.
Road accident figures often regret young victims between the ages of 12 and 14. The Weg Van 't School project wants to change this! Together with their teacher, students accurately map cycling routes to and from the school. They do this on the basis of the citizen science project Fietsbarometer of UGent. If they experience these routes as unsafe, they are encouraged to come up with an inventive solution to make their route safe.
As a leitmotiv throughout this process, the young people are encouraged to communicate about their activities. The project gives the students tips & tricks to enter into discussions with the local council in order to bring about change and to create visibility around their project.
By analyzing problems in the research process and thinking about solutions in the design process, we give students insight and responsibility. That is necessary for behavioral change.
