1936 Summer Olympics


In 1936, both the Winter and Summer Olympics were controversial for political reasons. Both times these Olympics took place in Nazi Germany, the Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Summer Games in Berlin.

The Olympic Games in Berlin have become the most famous. On Saturday, August 1, 1936, Adolf Hitler opened the 11th Summer Olympics in Berlin. The Nazis used the biggest sporting event in the world as pure propaganda. For over two weeks, Berlin seemed like the most perfect city in the world. All anti-Semitic expressions were swept under the carpet and Berlin showed its best side. Hitler was delighted! The only thing he couldn't direct was the sports performance. Jesse Owens, the black athlete from the United States, put a damper on the German side in that regard by being the absolute star of the Games with four gold medals ...
