Dear Mayor: Policy participation program for eleven and twelve year olds

Best Mayor is a policy participation process to allow young teenagers to use their voice and influence municipal policy.

The name of the project is twofold: both the address Dear Mayor, and the compliment, since the mayor who takes the interests of children and young people into account is the best mayor.

Goals
Young people are encouraged to think about municipal politics:

  • Which social themes do they consider important?
  • How can they use their voice to influence municipal policy?
  • How does politics work at a municipal level?

Game description

During the process, young teenagers come together during several sessions under the guidance of a game trainer to think in a playful way about the themes they want to tackle in their municipality. They know well where they feel good, what they want to change and where the pain points are in their (school) environment.

TIP

  • Children from the Free Primary School Sint-Joris-Weert presented their ideas to the municipal council members, which they came up with during the Best Mayor process of De Aanstokerij. Read more: Contagious children weigh on the policy in Oud-Heverlee.
  • Discover our campaign De Aanstokerij in the mood to inform as many children and young people as possible about the functioning of our democracy and the importance of their opinion and vote following the elections in 2024.
