In the Footsteps of Sher Singh: Assignments to a Soldier's Diary in WWI

A cook in the 34th British Division, Sher Singh, takes you on a journey through WWI. He keeps a diary where the students can read his story. His division exchanges Flanders for France and so he bumps into a compatriot: Hardit Singh Malik, pilot at the RAF. Together they dream about their homeland: India.

Sher Singh hears and sees more than an ordinary soldier, he cooks for the headquarters of the 34th British Division and is a good friend of Lieutenant Colonel J.Shakespear. He captures a lot of stories that way. He has regular contact with both the army staff and the soldiers.

Sher Singh was killed in action on October 2, 1918 and is buried in Zantvoorde British cemetery. Hardith Singh Malik survives the war and eventually reaches the age of 91.
