Decision-making in the European Union: Role-playing

In this role play, students learn why it is often very difficult to reach a compromise within the EU. They learn what other interests sometimes play a role, but also what the benefits are of working together.

The role-play is based on the difficult development of the real Chocolate Directive a few years ago.

With Brexit, it is very topical to discuss this theme and it also makes it clear that the EU can have both advantages and disadvantages for a member state.

On the website you can find an introductory video, a very extensive manual for the teacher, information sheets with the roles for the students and a possible extension.

Before playing the role-play, it is advisable to first briefly explain the decision-making of the EU (parliament, commission, council of ministers and the European council). You can find this here https://prodemos.nl/leren/krachtveld-europese-unie/
