Shroud of Turin: Research

With the six leaves in this package you can let the students in small groups do their own research on the Shroud of Turin. They are then allegedly inspectors of the Mega Fraud Department of the Turin Judicial Police. The groups are presented with scientific and historical facts in the form of corner work. They then have to come to a mutual decision: is the shroud real, or is it a forgery? Even if the evidence points to a forgery in the Middle Ages (as the C14 dating shows), there are still plenty of elements that make the object retain a shroud of mystery.

As an introduction to the research, I show the first minutes of an older documentary from Dutch TV on YouTube. Most of the other (newer) videos on YT are not usable, so I fall back on this documentary. After about ten minutes, the students have enough information to start working with the documents from my package.
