Hella S Haasse, Oeroeg: Teaching idea


The novella or short novel Oeroeg is the prose debut of the Dutch author Hella S. Haasse (1918-2011). The book was published in 1948 as a Book Week gift, was reprinted more than fifty times and has been translated into eleven languages. Haasse found the inspiration for the story in the former colony of the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), where she was born and spent much of her childhood.

The book belongs to the canon of Dutch-language literature, the list of texts considered essential Dutch-language literature by the literary field in Flanders.
