Paul van Ostaijen: Posthumous poems

In his Posthumous poems, Paul van Ostaijen (1896-1928) wanted to pursue 'pure lyricism' and to give the poem as much autonomy as possible, regardless of the thoughts, feelings or biography of the poet. Since the First World War, almost every Flemish poetic generation has been inspired by Van Ostaijen in one way or another. After all, no other collection of poems has had so much influence on the poets who came after him. Partly for this reason, the Posthumous Poems belong to our literary canon, the list of texts that are considered essential Dutch-language literature by the literary field in Flanders.
