Paul van Ostaijen: Rhythmic typography


The manuscript of the poetry collection Bezette Stad (1921) by Paul van Ostaijen (1896-1928) was untraceable for a long time. But now, a hundred years after its publication, the manuscript has surfaced and been purchased by the Flemish Government. It is one of the most remarkable manuscripts in our literature and it will be on display for the first time at the Boem Paukeslag exhibition. Occupied City 100! at the Letterenhuis in Antwerp in March 2021.

In this learning tool, students are introduced to the rhythmic typography of Paul van Ostaijen's poetry through the poem In Memoriam Herman Van den Reeck from 1920. The questions and assignments are aimed at the interpretation, creative processing and updating of this unique text. .
