Seven steps to data protection in education
This brochure helps you in seven steps towards data protection in education according to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the EU.
The GDPR is a new European regulation that imposes rules that governments, companies and all other organizations must comply with when they process personal data.
The GDPR offers citizens better protection when processing their personal data, but tightens up a number of rules, clarifies or extends existing legislation. It is as the Privacy Commission writes: 'A new wind is coming, not a hurricane'.
The new regulation will enter into force on 25 May 2018.
In educational institutions, there are many sources of information that contain personal data, for example:
- all personnel administration documents;
- the student or student tracking system;
- the children's diaries;
- reports;
- the information sheet that is requested to be completed when registering

The brochure was created in collaboration with the Privacy Commission, the Flemish Supervision Commission and the education providers.
