The first female Flemish chemical engineer: Marie-Louise Compernolle 1/2

After her studies, Marie-Louise continued to work as an assistant for four years. The first year with Professor Van de Velde, where she specialized in commodity knowledge, which she loved to do very much. At that time there was a general policy of anti-women and male assistants were given priority so that they could continue to grow. For example, her application for the position of assistant in experimental physics was first rejected. Later she was able to start as a probationary assistant in the laboratory of Professor Roger Moens (1901-1981). In 1934 her position was converted into a true assistantship. In 1936, however, she was, most exceptionally, not granted an extension and was again demoted to assistant ad interim as a result of the women-unfriendly university policy.
