Contemplating art with children: Audiovisual material and do-it-yourself step-by-step plan

What is the best way to view art with children? Start with the audiovisual collections at The Archive for Education that were created by teachers at the teacher training course at VIVES University of Applied Sciences, including creative incentives and a step-by-step plan.

The theater, dance, music and image collections contain a unique selection of video and sound fragments from Flemish museums and performing arts organizations, as well as didactic tips for targeted reflective conversations and activating creation assignments to carry out in the classroom. As a final part of the Artistic Viewing project, which ran for two years, the teachers added a do-it-yourself step-by-step plan for art appreciation.

Listening, watching, playing and dancing with young children (5 to 8 years)

Teachers can take children on a journey through works of art, music, theater and dance performances in different themes. With the creative activity stimuli in the collections, they also allow their class to effortlessly process what they have seen and heard.

Working musically with older children (8 to 12 years)

Students take a moment to think about what images, music, theater or dance do to us. Teachers can use the rich material to broach a theme or get students to work creatively with the activity stimuli in the collections.

Art appreciation with children, step by step

With this step-by-step plan, teachers can guide children as they consider any work of art or artistic fragment: looking, listening, expressing what they see and feel, and thinking about it. The teacher can then also appeal to the children's own creativity. The step-by-step plan can be used with the collections at The Archive for Education with audiovisual fragments about works of art, reading moments, musicians, or with integrated stage performances for children.

About the Artistic Looking project

The audiovisual material was selected and processed into lesson-ready collections based on the final objectives and concrete needs in teaching practice. The research project is a collaboration between VIVES University of Applied Sciences and meemoo , the Flemish archive institute, with the support of the Flemish Department of Education and Training.
